Tari: a two-layer PRIVACY-BY-DEFAULT ecosystem built by Monero privacy veterans.
Long-horizon engineering for the next era of crypto.
WHY TARI MATTERS
Crypto “altcoin land” is a hype-filled graveyard, full of vaporware disguised as “tech.” Microcaps are usually the worst of it: hype cycles, throwaway narratives, and marketing-first projects. Tari doesn’t play that game. Engineering-first, not marketing-first. Built to last, not built to flip.
Tari exemplifies infrastructure built carefully over time. It didn’t pop up last cycle. They spent over seven years engineering it before mainnet went live on May 6, 2025. Most projects chase attention first, then try to build. Tari did the reverse. That tends to age well.
As of Jan 12, 2026: XTM’s native market cap is around $10M, and wXTM on Ethereum is around $1.5M. It’s up ~47% on the week, but microcap price action is noise. The thesis here is infrastructure and execution, and it’s still early.
THE TEAM (THE REAL DIFFERENTIATOR)
This isn’t an anonymous dev team.
Tari is built by Riccardo “Fluffypony” Spagni (former lead dev of Monero) alongside Monero-adjacent cryptography veterans and operators (including Naveen and core contributors). These are battle-tested builders with a proven privacy track record, not a marketing squad shipping a whitepaper.
WHAT TARI IS (2-layer design)
Layer 1: Minotari (XTM)
- Proof-of-Work base chain: simple, secure, long-lived settlement layer
- Merge-mined with Monero, leveraging an existing hardened mining ecosystem
- Built to complement Monero’s privacy ethos, not compete with it
Layer 2: Ootle (XTR)
A high-throughput execution layer for apps, assets, payments, and DeFi, built with privacy-by-default at the user level. The goal is modern app-chain usability without turning your wallet into a public profile.
THE MECHANIC THAT MAKES THIS INTERESTING
XTR is minted by burning XTM 1:1. If Ootle usage grows, it can directly pull XTM out of circulating supply. Incentives stay aligned across L1 and L2 instead of becoming two disconnected tokens.
THE PRIVACY ENDGAME (the part most people miss)
Virtually all DeFi today is open-book finance. Wallet balances, tokens, NFTs, LP positions, entries/exits, and liquidation levels are public. That’s not freedom, it’s surveillance.
Ootle is built to deliver the benefits of DeFi, but there’s always privacy-by-default:
- lockups, vaults, and staking without doxxing position sizing
- LPing without advertising liquidity and strategy to bots
- lending and borrowing without broadcasting collateral and liquidation thresholds
- stablecoin rails for normal life (payments, subscriptions, settlement) without turning your wallet into a public profile
- less bot predation, less wallet stalking, less on-chain doxxing
If they execute this properly, it’s one of the cleanest “normal people can actually use it” narratives in crypto.
And that same privacy-by-default foundation isn’t just for DeFi. It’s what makes real-world digital assets finally usable at scale.
REAL-WORLD “ASSET” USE CASES (the original vision, expanded)
Where privacy-by-default becomes real-world utility:
- payments + stablecoins (P2P, merchant, subscriptions, settlement)
- ticketing + event passes (anti-scalp, timed validity, gated entry, resale controls)
- access keys + memberships (communities, premium content, software/API permissions)
- gaming + loyalty (portable items, points, tiers, rewards)
- creator rails + drops (monetization, token-gated releases, royalties)
- redeemables (gift cards, vouchers, coupons, store credit)
- proof-of-purchase + provenance (receipts, warranties, authenticity, resale history)
- composable “super-assets” (bundled assets like VIP + perks)
- private financial rails (staking/LP/lending live on the same privacy foundation - see above)
CROSS-CHAIN ACCESS (self-custody now, many-chain later)
If you want Ethereum-native liquidity without needing a centralized exchange, there’s wXTM (an Ethereum representation of XTM). You can wrap XTM into wXTM, self-custody it in an EVM wallet, and trade it on standard DeFi venues (Uniswap-style DEX rails), or buy and hold wXTM the same way.
The bigger direction is simple: omnichain access. Over time, the goal is that Tari assets and liquidity can route across many chains, so access becomes “plug in from wherever you already live.”
CeFi isn’t discouraged, it’s just not the only path. XTM is already available on exchanges like MEXC, and additional listings can follow as liquidity and awareness grow. I wouldn’t be surprised to see major U.S. venues, like Kraken, list $XTM over time as build quality, execution, and liquidity trend the right way.
EXTRA CATALYST NARRATIVE (Blink, AI agents, private money)
One more potential kicker: Blink, their browser-based AI agent (shopping is the obvious wedge, and “agent payments” is the bigger picture). The simple framing is: AI agents are coming, but most of them don’t have native rails for private, programmable value transfer or real economic interaction.
Blink is Tari’s way of making that future tangible. It’s positioned as an agent that can help complete real-world workflows across normal websites. It’s also a clean on-ramp narrative for stablecoin-style payments by proving demand through real usage.
Zoom out and the idea gets bigger: agentic commerce. You give an agent a bounded budget and clear permissions, it executes the workflow, and crypto rails settle the payment. If Tari nails this with Ootle, high-throughput execution plus privacy-by-default money movement, it becomes a credible foundation for a world where agents don’t just talk, they transact.
If they execute on Ootle plus Blink-style agent rails, Tari can become a serious private value layer for the next era of apps and agents.
THE PoW SETUP (4 lanes, 25% each)
That’s the app layer. Underneath it, Minotari is the security foundation. This is where Tari’s Proof-of-Work design gets differentiated.
Tari splits block rewards evenly across four mining lanes (25% each) to keep security diversified across hardware classes:
WHY THIS MATTERS: Instead of one mining class taking over, Tari deliberately spreads security across CPUs, GPUs, and ASIC/FPGA hardware and also taps Monero’s merge-mining ecosystem. That makes the network harder to capture and more resilient over time.
1) 25% RandomX merge-mined with Monero (CPU lane)
- Monero miners can merge-mine Tari with minimal overhead
- Security bootstraps from an existing hardened mining ecosystem
2) 25% RandomX Tari-only (CPU lane)
- Same RandomX family, but for people not mining Monero
- The “anyone can join” CPU lane
3) 25% SHA-3x (FPGA/ASIC lane)
- A lane for efficient pro-grade mining hardware
- Long-term security without letting ASICs dominate the whole network
4) 25% Cuckaroo29 / C29 (GPU lane)
- A GPU-oriented lane aimed at desktop miners
- Adds a distinct hardware ecosystem to the security mix
THE “EASY MODE” ONRAMP (Tari Universe app)
Tari Universe is a slick desktop app (Windows/Mac) that’s basically “download, click, mine.” Even older computers can participate and earn XTM while helping secure the network.
TL;DR
Proven builders. Multi-year engineering. Clean 2-layer design, capture-resistant PoW security, and a consumer-friendly mining app onboarding real participants. The endgame is scalable apps and DeFi with privacy-by-default. An evolution from public wallets to private, usable money.
